Really cool that you were able to use the base that you made.

When Rex (the guy who makes the BIAB bags) sent Drew and me bags, he pretty firmly indicated doing no sparge. That eliminate the need for a hoist. You simply use the bag as a filter.

Empty the bag into a garbage bag then clean the bag? Hand wash it or clothes washer?

I dump it on the compost out back and then just hose it off, never had an issue.

I empty it onto the compost pile. Turn it inside out and run hot water through it backwards. Husks and grain washes right off. Hang to dry. If you leave grain in it too long an oxiclean soak cleans it right up.

What is it about composting grain you are worried about in relation to the river nearby. Not a judgment as I dont care what you do but I am composting much less than 100 yrd. from a lake. Is there something I dont know?I'd love to compost my grain but it has me a bit worried living in a city and 100 yards from the river.

my thoughts too... proximity to a lake/river should make zero difference

Rats, I assume. Where I live now, compost piles are illegal, because of them.I'd love to compost my grain but it has me a bit worried living in a city and 100 yards from the river.

Looks like jkor and I might have the same hoist.
400lb harbor freight. Very useful. I have a mount for it in my attic so i can hoist things i can't lift up there.

I think it might be 220lb direct lift, 440lb with the pully system. I think it's the smallest hoist they have.

ah - that could be it! I use the pulley system just so it moves more slowly.
