So a family friend, who is really nice but liberal as all get out posted this today in regard to Hillary officially getting the spot:

Now, when we tell our daughters, our granddaughters, our nieces and any other little girls in our lives that they can do anything and be anything they want to grow up to be? We'll be telling them the truth - that there are no heights they cannot climb and no dream that will go unrealized. The sky is the limit going forward from this day!

I wanted to put something in to the effect of "yeah, I told my daughter this when Sarah Palin got the VP appointment for her party...I'm sure you felt the same!"

But evidently that makes me a dick. Well, that and other things, but for the purpose of this post...

IMO a first female president is in lots of ways an even bigger "lift" for the US than a first black president was. While its true that on the one hand, young girls can look around and readily see women CEOs news anchors, politicians, etc as role models, it's also true that even highly accomplished women can readily describe instances of rank sexism, and those without social standing obviously face even more blatant discrimination. Not that electing a woman president will end it any more than obama's election ended racism, but still a huge step forward regardless.

I'm still of the opinion that voting for a candidate based on their gender, is extremely short sighted, irresponsible.

I almost added a disclaimer to make it clear that I agree gender (or race) shouldn't be the basis of a vote. Still doesn't mean it's an important milestone.

Forgot about her!

Just to be clear...I understand a woman getting the right to run for president is monumental, and certainly trumps (woops) being a vp candidate - but if it were a republican candidate I know she wouldn't be praising it.

I always figured women could kick ass at desk jobs. This is nothing significant. Thatcher already set the bar well above Hillary. When chick astronauts became mainstream, now that was some girl power shit right there.

It must suck to have your identity defined by what you think you can't do.

Doesn't really feel like a high point to me. Considering what it takes to both want and attain the job these days I can respect any number of other aspirations by both men and women alike.

I'm not opposed to a woman having the job...

I'm just opposed to her having the job.

For the record, the person I *wanted* for the Republican Nomination from the day Romney got the nomination was Dr. Condoleeza Rice.  Seriously, I wanted her to run more than all the yahoos that tossed their hat into the ring this last time.
