Friends of mine moved into a new house over the summer, and guess what they found growing up their porch - hops! I cut one open, and it smells good and has the 'yellow dust' that we all love. However, I have no idea how to determine what kind of hop it is (or even if it's possible). So, help me solve the riddle of the mystery hops.

A photo would be a good start.

Yeah, I think that the shape of the hop is one way to tell. Someone said that Cascades are more "square", etc. Post a pic and let's see. If it ends up being Hallertau Mittelfruh, you're going to have to post a street address as well.

The only way to tell for sure is for you to pick the entire crop, dry it, vacuum seal it and send it to me for further evaluation, which would take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.J/K... post a few pics and possibly a measurements on average length of a few samples(i.e. not just one, because we all know that one is not a good sampling).

Not if the hops have a very tight length distribution

Wasn't it Freshops that had a page with the photo of each cone by variety? I can't find it now. Here's another page with a handful of varieties with photos. Link. Could be about anything in your neck of the woods.
