It gives me leaky gut and restless leg syndrome.

I assume it's the toxins.

Have you tried the aspartame detox?
Shit, I forget if that is the one where you detox from aspartame or WITH aspartame.

Sure - but you would think after 30+ years they might have actually found something toxic about this one... they haven't.

I agree. It's not safe because it's two amino acids linked together in a clever way. It's not toxic because it's not toxic.

We sweeten our ice tea with Stevia. It's pretty good, IMO.

Iced tea just gets lemon if anything. I rather enjoy the taste of just tea, actually.

This. Don't know why people ruin it with sugar. May as well throw some beans in there for good measure.

I have heard that there is some evidence that artificial sweeteners can trick your body into thinking you had sugar. This generates an insulin spike when none was needed, and can, scientifically speaking, #### your shit up long term.

Here's your evidence other than the "feck your shit up long term part" (though that wouldn't surprise me). A couple of years ago the local health food store was selling Zevia (a zero-cal stevia sweetened drink) on the cheap. Most of the flavors of this shit were horrible but there were one or two flavors we really liked. We otherwise drink no soft drinks or any sugar enhanced drinks at all.   Around this same time noticed I was getting lightheaded, jittery, as though my blood sugar was low when I would swim. I swim 3 days a week on average and had been for several years and never had this problem .This happened to me at least 15-20 times before I figured out the correlation. Whenever I drank a Zevia in the car on the way to the pool my blood sugar would bottom out 10 minutes into the workout.  Whenever I drank water, coffee, or seltzer (am almost always sipping on something when I drive) I would have no problems at all. I have read no science on the stuff but I am very certain I was getting an insulin bump every time I drank it and this resulted in the blood sugar drop each time I swam. I even tested this again several months after I stopped drinking that crap and sure enough I got the jitters and weakness again during a swim.

Anecdotal evidence and all, but Mrs. C. used to drink rum with diet soda.  The day after lots of drinking, she was having awful hangovers.  Very bad.  After hearing enough people warn against aspartame, she switched to regular soda.  The hangovers became considerably less extreme - way more manageable.  After a while, she switched to tropical flavored diet V8 Splash (sweetened with Splenda).  Hangovers became even LESS extreme.  So whether it's actually safe or not, I don't know.  I have heard it said that mixing alcohol with diet soda somehow gets you drunker faster, so who knows.
