So... my sister claimed that Aspartame is banned in Euorpe and we need to do the same here adn posted a link on facebook that goes to a site with poorly formatted blog that claims a University of Iowa study proves it causes health problems.

https://www.herbs-in...ealth-problems/

Iowa study:

https://now.uiowa.ed...ble-older-women

A quick internet search led to no official government sites that say its actually banned.

The same search debunked the Iowa study because it never took into account the pre existing health of the people studied.

Anyone else here think this stuff is bad for you?

Artificial sweetener

Why not just use real natural sugar or other natural sweeteners?

I read one study that showed it made rats crave sweets, so even if they consumed lower calorie aspartame food, they are more of the natural food, and their caloric intake wasnt reduced by aspartame. I'll try to dig up that study, even if it's not actually bad for you it would be nice to know if it works as intended or not.

There is nothing about aspartame that can kill you.  It is made up of two amino acids that are cleverly stuck together.  You get 20x more of those same amino acids in a single chicken breast.

I've seen that too.  I don't drink that much pop and when I do, hey, another 100 calories I don't eat.  Sweets usually aren't around here so I don't eat them much.  Well, Holidays excepted...........

I dunno about health hazards. I just think it tastes nasty.

Try a Whole Foods 365 Cola with Stevia.  You'll swear off soft drinks after a sip.........  Way nastier tasting stuff.

I prefer splenda in coffee over sugar.  I also like the flavor of McDonalds sugar free French Vanilla iced coffee which I assume has the Aspartame.  Other than that, I rarely have diet soda... maybe about 2-3 times per month.

Is it possible to make a dipeptide that is toxic?

I don't wanna go full Food Babe, but since chiral molecules can have entirely different activity based on whether you get the right hand or left hand version, I'm not gonna take it for granted that aspartame is safe.

But the real reason to avoid it is that it tastes bad and probably doesn't help anybody lose weight.

Sure - but you would think after 30+ years they might have actually found something toxic about this one... they haven't.

Granted I don't think it tastes very good but all the stuff you read saying it is poison is backed up only by woo, and not any science.

I have heard that there is some evidence that artificial sweeteners can trick your body into thinking you had sugar. This generates an insulin spike when none was needed, and can, scientifically speaking, #### your shit up long term.
