The case for session double IPA

I have been drinking a few different IPAs from Singlecut. Specifically Does Anybody Remember Laughter? and Moshuggie. They are hopped like a big HT style IIPA but are 7.2% ABV and 7.4% ABV respectively. Also a little thin in the body for the amount of hops. These beers are really hop bombs and I love that about them. At least they are above 7%. Has anyone else had anything like this?

1. Sounds like regular IPA to me.

 

2. Yes, I've made them except not thin in body.

 

3. Where does "session" come into play here?

 

ETA: Is this the brewery in Queens? We didn't make it there last time I was out there. Sounds like a place we need to check out?

Not really. Are 7.2 and 7.4 considered "session" these days? I was at a brewpub in Bloomington, IN that had something called "Campfire Session IPA" that was blonde, 4.5% and maybe 50 IBUs. It was very nice. Turned out to be 50/50 2-row and Wheat and then Amarillo and Simcoe with something like 1056. I made a batch of it and it was quite nice. I notice IPAs and session IPAs being "less malty" these days.

Yeah I generally think of something ~4.5% or lower to be in the seasonable range.

I admit that I don't care what you call it. I have been in the habit of making a few "hoppy blondes" lately. Between 5% and maybe 5.3%, something like Magnum to bitter, SRM 5 where there may be some Vienna or Munich but mostly 2-row and late, clean hops like Santiam, Ultra, Liberty, Crystal, Mt. Hood, Perle, etc. up to about 35 or 40 IBUs. I don't want someone saying it's not a "Session IPA" or "there is no such thing as a Session IPA" or whatever. I'll call it an APA, Extra Pale Ale, Hoppy Blonde or Dick Cavett. Don't care.

Yes, definitely check them out, they make great beer.

As to "Sounds like regular IPA to me".... That's what I say about session IPA and APA. Inevitably someone will say that it has more hop aroma than APA. That's what I mean about these beers. Definitely way more hops than a standard IPA.

Less than 7.5% is sessionable for me. But I'm like 6-2 230.

That said, I hate how everything is called "session" this and that these days. Pure marketing rubbish. In another thread, someone asked if there were commercial session IIPA, I think using the "brewing math" of imperial being a bigger version and session being a smaller version, these beers kind of fit as a session IIPA

I like your approach to nomenclature much better than using the word session. You are a good man Ken!

it can't really be "session" at that ABV.  that is just a very hoppy IPA.

Yeah that just sounds like an IPA. Charging the beer at the end of the boil, whirlpool, and dry hop with ridiculous amounts of hops seems pretty standard now a days.

It doesn't get me too twisted because I feel like I know better…. however…. a commercial brewery/brewpub calling something 7.5% sessionable could be viewed by some as irresponsible.

My guess is that most everyday beer-drinkers don't even know what session means. Clearly many beerheads know the term but many, many people do not. I have no problem with someone using the term to describe a beer that might be 5% or lower (I'm randomly using that number) to describe a beer that you can drink a few pints of without falling off your barstool. But if I were to see a 7.2 or 7.4 beer referred to as "session", it would raise some eyebrows for sure. But... I'm not into big(ger) beers anyway.

Well I had to write it out first! I just got back from the shitter, where all my best ideas are born...

 

Please take into account that I'm not a screen writer...

The setting is a brewery tap room at the bar...

 

Guy (to the bartender) - I’ll have an IPA
 
Bartender - wearing skinny jeans, fake big beard, tight shirt with belly hanging out. skarf around his neck and wool beanie cap on, fake tattoos on his arm sleeves…
 
BT - Oh man, you gotta try our Epic MEGA IPA!
 
Guy - OK, what’s an epic MEGA IPA?
 
*Cut to brewing scene adding hops to the kettle, mash, whirlpool, hop back, dry hop...*
 
BT - We add a shit load of hops to the beer in every stage of the process. BAM! More hops! BAM More hops! but we don’t stop there!
 
*cut back to the bar*
 
BT - BAM! More hops. *Bar tender slams a bunch of hops in the beer*
 
Guy - Uh, ok *reaches for beer*
 
BT  -  WAIT! DON'T DRINK IT!.... Eat these first.
 
*BT hands the guy a fist full of hops*
 
Guy - really this isn’t necess… *BT cuts him off*
 
BT - *While eating hops* You have to *munch munch* eat the hops first so your stomach is dry hopped. *munch munch*
 
Guy - *looking bewildered*
 
BT - Yeah, it makes your burps awesome and your shit smell fantastic! Like stone fruit and citrus! *holds up a bowl full of shit to his nose with half digested hops sticking out of it* Go ahead, take a whiff!
 
Guy - What the f… *gags*
 
BT - Then we add the shit to our kettle to make our hoppy kettle soured beer! We call it “The morning glory”
 
Guy - runs for the bathroom about to vomit
 
Cut to me - If you like great freshly brewed craft beer, but don’t like shit in your beer, come on down to Rib Bone and have a beer and some of our awesome ribs. The beer is brewed on premise, with fresh hops, malted barley, water, and yeast. We promise we don’t shit in your beer…

I drink a lot of IPA and I can tell you these beers are above and beyond the hoppiest IPA. The aroma really is like the modern IIPA.

As much as I think the term session is silly, I think session IIPA is sillier. It's not like there are some sort of legal guidelines as to what a beer needs to be to be called session. Or imperial for that matter. Oh, it's not destined for the royal court?! You can't call it Imperial! Don't tell me I can't drink a 6 pack of 7.4% beer in a session!!! ZOMG how dare you define my session?!?!?!?! If imperial means big, and session means small, do they cancel out? Imperial session kolsch is just regular kolsch? Session barleywine?!

Right, exactly what I was thinking... imperial is big and session is small so you can't have both. And I agree that no one should set guidelines for your session. If you want to drink 6 pints of 7.4% beer in a session, giddy up. My sessions are known to go on for many hours which is why I'm usually sipping/slugging 4.5% to 5% beer over the course of 8-10 hours especially on a beautiful, warm & sunny weekend day when friends are over, tunes are on and the grill is going.
