Hello all,What do you all think of this propane burner: https://bayouclassic...burner.htmRight now I'm doing 5 gallon batches, but eventually I may move to 10 gallon batches, so 185,000 btu's seems like a good investment. Also the price is pretty good (I was originally looking at a 55,000 btu one for $70 before I came across this one). What do you think? Good buy?

also, is 185,000 btu's overkill for 5 gallons? I figure since you can always turn down the heat, it's not... any thoughts on that too?

I just bought this burner a few weeks ago and have made one batch with it so far. It is a big improvement over my original cheap turkey fryer burner for sure. It kicks out a lot more heat and gets my wort up to boiling a lot faster. Cons would be it's a bit loud and most of the paint will burn off the first time you use it. This wouldn't be such a problem if you're outside, but firing it up in my open garage was a huge mistake. Clouds of noxious fumes kept coming off of it for 45 minutes. I'd still pull the trigger on it though.Home Depot has it for $39.96https://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100056313/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

the higher btu will give you more heat but they often use more fuel and you lose some level of control, more likely hood of scorching, and they are usually a little louder. It is the regulator more so than the burner that controls the output. I personally think 185k is overkill but it will work.I am running 55k on all three burners and it seems fine 10 gallon batches only take 15 min to heat up my strike water, I heat up my sparge water while I am mashing, and I turn on the kettle when I have sparged about 1/3 of the volume, it is boiling by the time the sparge is done. I don't think I have ever needed to turn the burners all the way up. So my overall wait time is only 15 min.

Alright well now I'm torn.Sounds like 55K btu will work (5 gallon), just will take a little longer, but will offer more control and less likelihood of scorching.185K btu will work faster, but offer less control and increases chance of scorching. Here the really confusing part, why is the 55K burner $50 and the 185K burner only $40 on the home depot website?185K: https://www.homedepo...logId=1005355K: https://www.homedepo...catalogId=10053

I just bought one of these (the top one) https://www.tejassmo...ironburners.htm it hasnt arrived yet, so I cant give a review, however they seem to make some high end stuff, so I figure the entry level should be good too. We'll see, the tracking info says it will be here friday.

The SQ14 is probably a more rugged build quality. The SQ14 is rock solid and you can fit almost anything on it and it's not going to tip or fall off.

I also have the SQ14. It gets plenty hot and I like the sturdy platform and large surface. I don't think more BTUs are necessarily better. On my SQ14 for example, I never turn it full blast because the flames just jump out from the sides of the kettle, wasting propane. So more BTUs wouldn't do me any good cuz I couldn't turn it up that high anyway.

What do you all think of this propane burner: https://bayouclassic...pane_burner.htm

This is the burner I use on my brew stand. I think it's the exact same burner as the one you posted, but without the stand and hardware. I use a 20 psi regulator and then distribute to the 3 burners on my stand, each controlled by it's own gas ball valve. I've been pretty happy with the burners. The price is hard to beat (they were $11/ea when I bought them), they throw more than enough heat for 10-12 gallon batches, and they are reasonably adjustable. They are definitely loud though when fired full blast.
