Had a really stellar India Brown that one of the Schlafly brewers cooked up for his wedding beer (Schafly's like that with their help). Really nice. I've tried a few UK/British RyePAs with UK east - drinkable was about the best I would call it. I think you need (or I like) American hops and yeast with rye.So of course while driving back from KC this sounded nice after I started thinking. First thoughts....India Brown/Black Rye Pale Ale (obviously this will be black)11.5 Gal batch - 1.065 vicinity33% British 2-row 33% American 2-rwo 6% Cara something Rye - looks like a 60 SRM contributrion 4% Chocolate Rye24% Malted RyeHit it early with Galena/Chinook for a bittering addition ~ 25 IBUsAnother 35 IBU's from 20 - 10 minutes of Centennial and Amarillo.Dryhop/flameout......... of course.Wyeast 1272Watcha think? I'm brewing something this week just to propagate the yeast for the above recipe so it's not set in stone...

I'd say use a basic Rye IPA recipe with Carafa 3(the dehusked one) and adjust from there.

I like your recipe. I just put an India Brown in the keg that I brewed about a month ago. I took an IPA recipe and darkened it and gave it a roasty twist with 4oz of Carafe II and 40z of Roasted Barley. I like your recipe and the proportions. I think it should work well. Mine has a nice hop bite with a roasty aftertaste. I say go with what you got. Looks like nice Rye contribution along with the specialities.

This one's about done with primary. Ended up with 1.056 and 57 IBU's by choice (have enough way over 1.060 in the queue waiting to be carbed). The SRM is off the scale. I went with all Am. 2-row since the rye should have a say in it and subbed a little carafa for the choc rye.. Only problem was a leaking fermenter while filling so I added some US-05 since I didn't know how much 1272 slurry went on the floor...... Figured mixed yeast was better than underpitching. WTH, nice to have a totally unreproducable one every once in a while.

Kegged this today. Crap, I was sorting through grain yesterday for today's brew and found that the cara and chocolate rye I ordered was wheat........ Forgot who I ordered from but they screwed up. So it was brewed with chocolate and cara wheat. This should be a strange one.
