I'm assembling a rear end for the Jeep based on a Ford 9" center section, and the housing came unpainted. I primed and painted it this evening, to include the surface where the center section (a.k.a. the gear housing, or "chunk") mates to the housing with a gasket in between.

I'm pretty sure it should be bare metal based upon the fact that the mating surface on the center section appears to be bare, but figured I'd ask before I bust out the Dremel. :D

Yes, bare metal. Another thing that works is a piece of scotch brite that you dip into lacquer thinner. That will take it right off.MB
