When I read Bread Baker's Apprentice, I bought some instant yeast because that's what the author recommends. But the only size the store had was these 1lb bricks. I didn't think I'd use that much yeast before it went bad but it cost about the same as one of those little jars, so I thought "what the heck." It took more than 2 years but it's gone now.
